The Bitch is Dead
After a weeks hiatus VKTRS is back and with a vengance.
The title refers to Casino Royale which I watched recently, but I hope it grabbed your attention as you may have thought I was talking about another news story. Well, I wasn't.
But I am now. If I may be permitted to stand up atop my pedestal and share my 0.02 with you, I am left entirely nonplussed by the media furore surrounding Jade Goody (R.I.P). I found myself realising earlier that in terms of media coverage this is the biggest death this decade (a decade which has seen us lose the Queen Mother, Ronald Reagan - one of the most influential figures in US Political History - and James Brown, one of the most influential figures in musical and cultural history as well as many, many more) and probably the biggest since Diana. Indeed, I found myself astonished at Gordon Brown comparing the two and jokey claims have arisen that Jade Goody is "our Diana". Most of the astonishment was at Gordon Brown claiming he was "deeply sorry"; really?
Yet while Diana was, like Goody, just someone who existed to live in the public eye, she was involved in a great deal of humanitarian work while Goody, well, was involved in an international race row. Don't get me wrong what's happened to Jade Goody is sad and it goes without saying that there are few worse things imaginable than losing one's mother and my heart really does go out to those kids and everyone surrounding the family, but I am left entirely confused about why there is so much outcry.
Today it was announced that Leon Walker, a rugby league player with Wakefield who showed much promise at the age of 21, passed away after collapsing with a suspected heart attack. To me this is a genuine tragedy, to see someone so young and with so much promise slip away is devastating for the sport. Last week Natasha Richardson's sudden and sad death made headline news yet today that's been all but forgotten. It is a damning comment on modern day society and our "celebrity culture" that out of three public figures the one who contributed nothing to peoples lives is the one who we are all deeply in mourning for. Don't get me wrong; I have no ill feeling towards Jade Goody, and again my thoughts are with and for her family. My Ill feeling is towards the media.
It has been said that Jade Goody died the way she lived, in the public eye. To me the fact that her passing away modelled the media circus (and that is the only word) that was her life is sad and again typical of this celebrity culture of ours, but at the same time if it was her wish then it was her wish and one cannot say more than that. Jade Goody - the first media death.
After a rare heavyweight bit usually (and probably still) best left elsewhere, I've decided just to briefly introduce this weeks articles - we have myself looking at Twatmunk, Dave's had a look at pieces by George Michael and Right Said Fred while guest contributor Hector Roddan has had a look at Billie Joe Armstrong and Fashion Victim.

This is the chip diddy munk. Let's hear what he's got to say...
And so in one of our manlier songs this week we have George Michael and Faith - featuring a certain Roman Abramovich (yes, you read that right).
Dave is too sexy. Oh. No. Sorry, the song is. Right.
Guest contributor Hector has a look at this "classic" (by definition at least) BJA song.
