Alda - Girl's Night Out

You know when you're walking through town and that pink limo comes through accompanied by screams...

so you wanna take me out tonight
have a meal avoid a fight
talk about the other night
when love was out of sight

Alda has obviously been taught some strange mediation techniques, as she thinks being asked out for dinner is a way to prevent arguments. How wrong she is, as this subject is a minefield for disagreement. First of all someone says they want to "try that new Portuguese restaurant that just opened in town" and then another interjects saying "I don't like that can we just go to Pizza Express" and then, the first person says "We always eat there! Why can't we try something new for once? You're so fussy, I want a divorce!" etc etc.

so you wanna make it up to me
show me what a man you can be
but i'm sorry not tonight, 'cos
the girls are going out
you see the girls are going out

Alda's boyfriend has clearly done something to displease her. It could be something as minor as forgetting to bring home that winter-flowers air freshener from Tescos, to a full blown affair. The fact that she's decided to go out with her friends on a "girls night out" or as I like to call it a Night in the Seventh Circle of Hell with Cosmos, suggests she needs a bit of me time. Still insulting his manhood is a bit far perhaps. If he's commited adultery then fair enough, but if this is a silly tiff about who forgot to take out the rubbish then she's bang out of order!

it's just a girls night out
we'll have fun & scream & shout
it's time for us to have a night
without a man or boy in sight
it's just a girls night out
we can dance & sing out loud
not a man or boy in sight
girls night out oh, what a night

night outAh doesn't it sound like Alda and the girls are going to have a rip-roaring time out on the town. I'm sure there'll be cocktails, embarrassing stories, ice-cream the lot. And of course - yes indeed - there will be no men to ruin their fun and frolics, although the way Alda's spinning this yarn she's implying that the men will want to get involved.
I suppose some might by the mere fact that they are women and the man in question may be on the pull, but they are going to be in the minority, it is only a brave man who tries to pull in that scenario. In any case few live to tell the tale, and many don't bother as they would be in for one of the dullest and awkward nights of their lives, it's not like many men say to their partners "ooh! A girls night out, can I come please please I'll be really good," no didn't think so.

I wouldn't say that there will be no men involved at all either as like it or not, women (from my experience at least) tend to spend most of their time talking about men anyway and I would expect that this is true of a girls night out too (boyfriends, "fitties" and one-night stands are all conversation worthy so I am led to believe). Nice one girls, you really showed us!

my daddy rang again today
he's tryin' hard he's been away
so he turned up after all these years
i do not show him any tears

As I thought men have entered the conversation, although in the shape of Alda's father who she seems to have been estranged from for a while now. However, it seems Daddy has turned up again and is trying to make amends, something that Alda is not too happy with. I know her father hasn't been there for her for but to just ignore his calls is a little cold.

This chat must be bringing down the mood of the party a little place. No, in fact I'll go further and say this verse doesn't actually fit the scenario at all. A second ago the party was in full swing with everyone singing and dancing like idiots, and suddenly Alda starts bringing Daddy issues into the equation. Talk about being a kill-joy.

he wants to take me out tonight
and start again i think he's right
i'm sorry daddy not tonight
the girls are going out
you see the girls are going out

daddy issuesOh god it gets worse! It seems Alda's father wanted to get together tonight to talk through their issues, but she's turned him down to go on her girls night out. With a loving daughter like that you can see why he was a committed father... I guess it will just have to wait, that is unless Daddy has a terminal disease and is trying to make amends before he goes to the great beyond, in which case time could be of the essence. Isn't this whole subject matter of father issues a little dark for a pop song and for a girls night out in general?

are we ready to come together (yeah)
black girlfriend - white girlfriend
will our friendship last forever (yeah)
brown girlfriend - yellow girlfriend
& we'll always have a reunion (yeah)
cool girlfriend - male girlfriend
when we're marred & cooking an onion (yeah)
your girlfriend is my girlfriend

diversityOk now everyones forgotten about Alda's father (and not a moment to soon quite honestly) and decided to come together in a great diverse group. It seems every ethnic group and colour is accepted here (although it says nothing about the Scots for which I am most shocked), it must be wonderful although apparently a male girlfriend is also welcome. I'm not sure what a male girlfriend is, but I'd hazard a guess that it is either a very butch lesbian or a hermaphrodite. Surely Alda isn't trying to use a feminized noun to refer to a man? Now I know she's Icelandic but that's no excuse for poor grammar.

Alda seems to have a very simplified view of married life too as she looks at it exclusively for onion cookery. I have to say I have never heard in any wedding vows the line "to hold and to cook onions."Also is she talking about marrying a man or a woman as she seems to be talking a lot about girlfriends? You know what this just isn't worth me bothering...
